| Testifying? Six Testifying Tools To Use |
|
You are called to testify. You agreed to testify. Now what? You want to put your best foot forward for two reasons: your credibility is on the line and your fiscal future hangs in the balance. Incorporate these tools into your testimony and your confidence should soar. 1. Review, review, review the medical record. You will be testifying about the medical record so be totally familiar with it so you don't have to say "I don't know" or "I don't recall". 2. Dress appropriately. This means either wear your uniform or business casual clothes. Nothing else will do. 3. Meet with your attorney beforehand. Go through mock questions and answers. You must know the material cold. 4. There's no such thing as "off the record". Even conversation you may have with opposing counsel prior to testifying could be introduced as evidence. Be careful what you say. 5. No jokes, no humor. There is plenty of time after your deposition, or trial, to laugh. Just don't do it at your expense. 6. If you made notes, plan to testify about them. This doesn't mean not to make notes. Just know you'll have to produce them, if you're an expert witness. Consider these testifying tools and proceed with caution when testifying. |
